The UAE will be the ones being hunted in the Julius Baer Gold Cup which gets underway at Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club next weekend. The Gold Cup, in its tenth year, will be held from 19 February to 8 March under the aegis of HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Deputy Ruler of Dubai. In winning the Silver Cup last week, the UAE team led by patron HH Sheikha Maitha bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum claimed the inaugural competition of the five tournament Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series. And now the hunters are bound to be targeted by the seven other sides in the competition. UAE have been drawn in Group A alongside Desert Palm, Mahra and Abu Dhabi, while Group B features Ghantoot, Habtoor Polo, Zedan and Dubai Wolves.
The group stage of the competition will employ a round robin format, with the top two teams making the Gold Cup semifinals directly and the second placed teams taking on the third placed sides in the opposite groups in a quarter-final. While the winners move to the Gold Cup semis, the losers play the fourth placed sides in each of the group in the last four round for the subsidiary competition. The finals of Gold Cup and subsidiary competition will be held on 8 March. Mohammed Al Habtoor, Vice Chairman & CEO of Al Habtoor Group, Founder of the DPGC Series and Patron of Habtoor Polo team said: “As a team patron and a polo enthusiast, I am excited to have eight strong teams with remarkable top ranking players join us for the Julius Baer Gold Cup this season.
“As we celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Gold Cup tournament, I take this opportunity to thank of our patrons, sponsors, players and polo enthusiasts and the city of Dubai. Without their support this milestone would not have been possible.” Régis Burger, Head Middle East, Julius Baer (Middle East) Ltd. added: “During our presence in the region for the past 15 years, we have sought forward thinking partnerships that stand out within the Middle Eastern region and the Julius Baer Gold Cup is one of them.
