GROUP TWO placed, Portamento has taken up stud duties at Andrew Spalding’s Hedgeholme Stud, Co. Durham.

No fee has been set for the 8yo, the second son of Shamardal currently at stud in Britain, with interested breeders asked to contact the stud directly.

Portamento joins Intrinsic, who made a strong start to his stud career last year, standing for Malih Al Basti at Hedgeholme Stud. Having broken his maiden at two for Charlie Appleby on his second start, defeating the subsequent dual Group Two winning juvenile Estidhkaar by four lengths at Goodwood, Portamento went on to earn his first black type when runner-up in the Listed Doncaster Stakes over 6f and he won three times more as a juvenile from 5f-6f.

His 3yo season was highlighted by his second place in the Group 3 Al Basti Equiworld Hackwood Stakes at Newbury, behind Strath Burn, who went on to be a short head second in the Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup. Transferred to race in the UAE, he continued to race with honour for several more seasons, with highlights including finishing third to the multiple Group One winner Blue Point in the Group 2 Meydan Sprint last year.

Trained by Ali Rashid Al Rayhi for Mohd Khalifa Al Basti, he won once after leaving Godolphin, a 1600m turf handicap in April 2018 at Jinma Lake in China.

Bred by Darley, Portamento is a half-brother to three winners in the US by A P Indy and Bernardini, and they are out of the top- class Unbridled’s Song mare Octave, whose top level victories include the Mother Goose Stakes and the Coaching Club American Oaks, as well as four runner-up spots in Group One  company.

She is a full-sister to the Stakes winner Unbridled Behaviour and a half-sister to the multiple Graded Stakes winners Belle Cherie, while the Stakes winning second dam Belle Nuit is a half-sister to the Group 1 winner Ms Eloise.
