Trainer Charlie Appleby is dreaming of Blue Point dominating a wide open sprint division after the red hot favourite impressed in winning the 6f Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint, giving the trainer, William Buick and Godolphin a second winner on the Dubai World Cup card.Buick could be seen cruising aboard the colt Appleby says is the fastest to ever come up his gallops, and while the favourite was made to work by gallant runner-up Belvoir Bay, he always appeared to be in control and won the dash by a length and a quarter. Appleby said: “I knew from the body language, as much as you never get confident too soon, and felt that William had pretty much everything covered there. “I’m delighted. I’ve always been very fond of him, ever since his 2yo days and he’s doing what we always hoped he would do one day.”

Blue Point has shown his blistering speed on occasions, most notably when winning the 5f Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot last year, but has now strung together a sequence of three impressive victories and is believed to be at the peak of his powers. Buick said: “He has been brilliant in his two prep races and has copied that today. He travelled really strongly and has again shown a great turn of foot. When he gets to the front he knows he’s done enough. “It’s great at the age of five he’s showing everyone how good he is and he has always shown us so much speed. I remember riding him as a 2yo and I’d never ridden a faster horse before he made his debut. He’s developed into a top class sprinter now.”

Appleby confirmed that a return to Royal Ascot for a defence of his King’s Stand crown was on the agenda for Blue Point, who was well fancied to win last year’s Al Quoz Sprint but was withdrawn at the start with a nosebleed. US trainer Peter Miller was responsible for the second, Belvoir Bay, and third, Stormy Liberal. He was delighted by the performances and said: “Blue Point is a super horse and it was no disgrace finishing second and third to him.”
