Ottokar appears a potential Classic King

Owner Paul Roy reckons he has unfinished business in the Epsom Derby, but the former BHA chairman could put that right after King Ottokar emerged as a live contender for the 1m4f Classic by winning the 1m2f conditions race in which dual Arc heroine Enable was beaten two years ago at Newbury . The son of 2005 Epsom ace Motivator is still a double figure price for the Derby, in which Roy’s Sixties Icon was seventh behind Sir Percy in 2006. “I’m very excited and think he’s a lovely horse,” the owner said of King Ottokar. “I’ve been to the Derby once before with Sixties Icon, who went on to win the St Leger, but I’ve always maintained he was a real baby; he’d run twice before and if the Derby was three months later it would have been different, so there’s unfinished business.

“I was born and bred in Epsom, it’s my home and all my family are buried there, so it would mean a lot.” Trainer Charlie Fellowes is also thinking big and added: “I’ve always thought he was very good, but my very good and John Gosden’s very good are very different things but he might just be John Gosden’s very good. “He could be the best I’ve trained. Prince Of Arran is the highest rated I’ve had and this fella isn’t far off him now.”
