Legendary Brazilian jockey Jorge Ricardo is making quite the splash in the UAE President Cup Series on home soil and claimed another victory in the Series late August when guiding the Mario Andre schooled Blueks Rach to a sensational success at the Hippodrome Cidade Jardim.

Contesting the 1100m UAE President Cup for Fillies IV in sodden conditions on dirt, it seemed like Marlize Rach, in the hands of Fernando Larroque, was destined to make all as she set the pace and looked comfortable leading the field into the straight.

But if Larroque was sure of putting the race to bed he would not have bargained for what was to unfold in the final 400m as Blueks Rach and Ricardo, who turned for home fourth down the centre of the track, showed great guts amidst the downpour and made a bid for glory that was answered in the affirmative in the final strides.

Ricardo and his racing partner kept themselves focused until the end, wiping away the near five length deficit from Marlize Rach to win by a half length. Velinia Rach finished second with Oberdan Pereira up, while Marlize Rach was a further neck back in third.

It was Ricardo’s 13,121st career success and he said: “It was a spectacular race. Trainer Mário André really believed he could win because Blueks Rach finished fourth in the last race and is a very well trained horse.

“It really was a very close race. I started well and saved Blueks Rach for the last few furlongs. It was a beautiful success and it is a pleasure to be able to attend and compete in the Arabian races.”

Blueks Rach owner Ricardo Jamil Saliba said: “It was certainly the most exciting race of the year with three mares fighting for first place practically together. It was an incredible reaction from Jorge Ricardo at the end, which makes us very proud to have him riding a winner for our operation.”

Almir Ribeiro, Racing Director of the Brazilian Arabian Horse Breeders Association (ABCCA), added: “It was one of the most exciting races we have organised and an absolutely spectacular victory for Jorge Ricardo. We had the participation of eight fillies of different owners, which demonstrates the interest of new owners to have their horses competing in Purebred Arabian racing. It was a spectacular race with a truly breathtaking final!

“I want to thank our sponsors, His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE and Minister of Presidential Affairs and Faisal Al Rahmani, President of the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing (IFAHR) and Director of The UAE President Cup, for staging the UAE President Cup Arabian Purebred Classic Series – South America Mondial Brazil and for believing in and investing in Arabian horse racing in Brazil.”

The Prêmio UAE President Cup Series for Fillies – South America Mondial Brazil is organised by Brazilian Arabian Horse Breeders Association in partnership with Jockey Club de São Paulo.
