Emirati owner Ziad Galadari enjoyed success on the first day of the Derby weekend at Epsom Downs with Mountain Angel in the Investec Wealth and Investment Handicap over 2000m.
While success aboard the 5yo Dark Angel gelding turned out to be the third in four races for jockey Andrea Atzeni, who had earlier claimed the Group 1 Coronation Cup with Defoe, it was a second success of the afternoon for trainer Roger Varian, who had also schooled Defoe.
Mountain Angel was terrific as he came through with a powerful run in the final 100m to put the race to bed ahead of Jazeel who was a length behind with Mr Scaramanga a further three fourths of a length behind in third.
Atzeni said: “I was very confident coming into the race. He has been improving a lot and mentally he has grown a lot and we know he handles the track very well so there was not a moments concern.
“He travelled beautifully and we didn’t go real quick. Once he got to the front he went strong.”
Varian added: “He’s definitely a little bit improved. He was unlucky in form last year, but he has improved as he got older and I am delighted for the owner. This horse has done well winning two races at Epsom so he clearly likes the track here.
“He is versatile when it comes to ground and he has been training well. I don’t think he has the pace to be a miler, I think this is his trip.”
