Jockey Antonio Mesquita and trainer Oberdan Pereira celebrated a massive success in the UAE President’s Cup Fillies’ race at the Cidade de Jardim Racecourse in Sao Paulo last week.

Pereira was furthermore the dominant name on the scoresheet of the 1000m turf contest in which Gwan AJR led in a 1-2-3 for his yard as she dictated proceedings from start to finish to win ahead of stable companions Velinia Rach and Helanca Rach.

Mesquita and Gwan AJR, a daughter of All Pol Rach, were in absolute command. They broke well and without much fuss, Gwan AJR stealthily moved clear of the rest of her seven rivals. Mesquita had to hardly move a muscle on board and Gwan AJR still finished seven clear of Velinia Rach, the ride of O Pereira Filho, with Helanca Rach a further three behind in the hand of Jeane Alves.

Winning trainer Pereira said: “Gwan AJR came well trained and was totally prepared and our job was to merely help her get used to the surface and we had to ensure she broke well. We did some work with her and she showed that she had the potential to do an excellent race and won from end to end.”

Gwan AJR’s rider Mesquita added: “Gwan AJR is an excellent mare who has already shown that she has the potential to be a great champion.”

The UAE President Cup Series is held under the patronage of the His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Racing Festival, which carries the name of Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE and Minister of Presidential Affairs. The Festival through its many series encourages owners and breeders to breed and acquire Purebred Arabian horses.

The Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Racing Festival is active around the world with races sponsored in Britain, United States, Europe and South America.

The race was organised by the Brazilian Arabian Horse Breeders Association (ABCCA) in partnership with Jockey Club de São Paulo. Almir José Ribeiro, the Racing Director of ABCCA, thanked the Sheikh Mansoor Festival organisers for their support in sponsoring and promoting the cause of Purebred Arabian racing.

Ribeiro said: “I want once again to thank our sponsors HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs and Faisal Al Rahmani, President of the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing (IFAHR) and Director of The UAE President Cup Series, ABCCA Board and passionate Arabian horse breeders, who believe in the success of racing in Brazil and direct their breeding programs to sport animals.

“We had another great race with the participation of eight fillies that arrived in Cidade Jardim in the last two months. This will surely bring much joy to their owners and breeders.”
