Charlie Appleby and James Doyle savoured a second success on the opening day of the Epsom Derby weekend after Space Blues followed up on Pinatubo’s success in the opening race of the card.
Victory in the Listed Investec Surrey Stakes over 1400m was the second straight success for the 3yo son of Dubawi, who won a handicap at York a little over a fortnight back. Space Blues found a bit of traffic early on but was ridden clear with 200m left to run and kept on well to win by a neck from the Richard Hannon schooled Urban Icon, the ride of Tom Marquand. In third place, a length and half behind was Marie’s Diamond.
Earlier, Pinatubo proved just too strong for his rivals in the Investec Woodcote EBF Stakes, which got the Derby weekend affairs going at Epsom.
Trained by Appleby, the 2yo Shamardal colt ran splendidly to win the 1200m event by a length and a half under James Doyle from Oh Purple Reign with Misty Grey a further three fourths of a length behind in third.
