A RELATIVELY quiet weekend, with just 13 races, but Doug Watson took full advantage of the Meydan opportunities on Thursday, saddling the winners of half the six Thoroughbred races to regain a clear lead in his defence of the trainers’ title. Seven jockeys shared the races between them at the UAE’s flagship racecourse with reigning champion Tadhg O’Shea pulling two clear of the chasing pack.

He drew a blank at Al Ain the following day though when a double for Antonio Fresu drew him level. Watson was not involved so a single Ernst Oertel winner was the most significant occurrence with regards to the trainers’ title. That winner, like virtually all of Oertel’s, was homebred by Khalid Khalifa Al Nabooda, the reigning Champion Owner closing the gap on Al Ajban Stables who still hold an advantage, 8–7.

Again just two meetings this weekend upcoming but a particularly quiet one with only 12 races, seven for Thoroughbreds.
