In what was an absolute display of sheer power and acceleration Tower Of London landed Godolphin the Grade 1 Sprinters Stakes over six furlongs at Nakayama in some style on Sunday.
Trained by Kazuo Fujisawa and ridden by Chistophe-Patrice Lemaire, the 4yo Raven’s Pass colt breezed past Mozu Superflame in the final strides to win by a half length with Danon Smash quickening up to take third a further neck behind.
It was a first Grade One success for Tower Of London, a two time Grade Two winner, who took his place in the stalls on the back of a three length success in the Centaur Stakes at Hanshin three weeks prior.
At Nakayama on Sunday, Tower Of London broke well under Lemaire but was settled in midfield by his French rider, who got him to switch to his left as the bend gave way to the straight. Once in the stretch, and with a little under two furlongs to race, Tower Of London was switched into top gear and responded with sound acceleration to yank back his rivals one at a time, with long time race leader Mozu Superflame, trained by Hidetaka Otonashi and ridden by Fuma Matsuwaka, unable to hold on to his big lead and forced to cede the initiative in the final strides.
Danon Smash, the charge of Takayuki Yasuda and ridden by Yuga Kawada, snatched third from Mr Melody with a late flourish.
