Charlotte New booked her spot in the starting field of the HH Sheikha Lateefa bint Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan International Pony Championship grand finale after winning the New Zealand leg of the race at Hastings Racecourse.
The race was held as part of the HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival and drew more than 3,000 cheering spectators to the scenic racecourse.
Run over 300 metres of turf, 14yo New emerged victorious from a field of nine as she rode past the finish aboard Armidale Hitari. Second and third went to Jessica Lawrence and Emma De Lautour riders of Slippery and MacIntosh respectively.
New was thrilled to receive her ticket to compete in the world finals in Abu Dhabi in November and said: “I am so excited and thrilled to be heading to Abu Dhabi in November to represent New Zealand in the final of the series. I am looking forward and will do my best to win there.”
She received her prize from the hands of legendary New Zealand jockey Noel Harris, with Chris Watson, New Zealand’s IFHRA representative also in attendance, during the presentation ceremony.
Watson said: “We thank HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE and Minister of Presidential Affairs, for his generous sponsorship of the race and we also thank HH Sheikha Lateefa’s interest and the importance of her role as the young patron and ambassador for international pony racing.”
