ARATHER subdued, distinctly low key, equine auction at Meydan on Monday was highlighted by a pair of EERC (Emirates Entertainment Racing Club) purchases, both from the Red Stables draft of Doug Watson. At Dh60,000, pride of place went to Rougher, a 5yo gelded son of Lookin At Lucky and a new recruit with plenty of options considering he remains a maiden after seven starts for RRR racing. Runnerup in both outings this season, over 1950m then 1600m at Jebel Ali, new connections will be hoping he can make it third time lucky for the new campaign with an early January target already identified.
For Dh5,000 less, Dangerous Thought will also now be sporting the EERC silks and would appear an ideal syndicate horse given his versatility regarding tracks and distance. A 7yo Super Saver gelding, he has two victories to his name, both over 1200m at Sharjah but has also finished runner-up at Jebel Ali over 1400m and Meydan, at the longer trip of 1700m. On behalf of EERC, syndicate spokesman, Justin Byrne, said: “We looked at this sale to top up our team as we have had a difficult start to the season with some horses struggling for races and others having little niggles.
“Rougher is one who stands out who I felt would win soon. With the large number of races this season for horses rated below 70, Dangerous Thought will be a fun horse for the syndicate. He likes all of the tracks and two of his three runs so far this season show that he is ready to win again. “Finding fit, ready to race horses is not always easy in the UAE and this is why this sale is ideal. We expect to run both of our new recruits on 8 January at Jebel Ali and we plan to have a few more of the team out that day.
Hopefully we can start 2021 with a bang!” Watson also consigned the third top lot, Big Brown Bear, for whom Jaffar Marzooqi Ahmed Marzooqi paid Dh50,000, Dh10,000 more than his other significant purchase, Eynhallow, a Dubai World Cup Carnival winner for Godolphin on his latest start in February.
