EFFORIA In a veritable landslide, Efforia has become Japan’s Horse of the Year with 277 of the 296 available votes in the ballot for the nation’s most prestigious equine award. The remaining 19 votes went to Japan’s historic Breeders’ Cup heroines Loves Only You (18) and Marche Lorraine (1). The Horse of the Year title is determined by votes from Japan’s racing journalists, and Efforia was also unanimously named Champion 3yo Colt. SNOWFALL Dual Classic winning filly Snowfall, who was put down last week after sustaining a serious injury, was a record breaking Oaks winner at Epsom, where she scored by a superlative 16 lengths under Frankie Dettori. The daughter of Deep Impact also won the Irish Oaks by eight and a half lengths, the longest winning margin since Blakestown won by ten in 1901. Add in a four length win in the Yorkshire Oaks, plus three and three-quarters in the Musidora, and she won four races in 2021 by the not insignificant matter of a cumulative 32¼ lengths. Snowfall seriously damaged her pelvis a few weeks ago at Ballydoyle and could not be saved after her condition deteriorated. “We did everything we could for her but it wasn’t to be,” said trainer Aidan O’Brien.
