Polo Bin Drai live up to their billing in Winston Churchill tournament

The Sir Winston Churchill Cup drew to a close on Saturday with Bin Drai winning an intensely contested final 7-5 at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club in Dubai. Bin Drai were the favourites going into the final against Habtoor Polo, but if they had expected the showpiece match to be a walk in the park they were wrong. Fortunately, Bin Drai have the players who can turn things their way and when the going got tough the champions proved their mettle. Bin Drai took the lead in the first chukka, but Habtoor hit back immediately, still the winners led 4-3 at half-time.

Bin Drai led 6-4 going into the final chukka, but Habtoor reduced the deficit after Guillermo Cuitino converted a penalty. However, Bin Drai managed to score again before the end for the final victorious 7-5 score. The Subsidiary Final saw Kuwait Polo team edge Mahra Polo 5-4. Meanwhile, Salim Ahmed Al Suwaidi claimed the honours in the EEF Show Jumping Training Show which ran on the sidelines of the polo tournament. The show proved to be one of the largest in the region this season, with a total of 200 entries signing up across the four categories.

Finishing second behind Al Suwaidi, who rode Concha, was Maya Smythe on board Galando. Youssef Sawwas was third atop Elton. Mohammed Al Habtoor, chairman of Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club said: “We are proud to be the hosts of such a great show and we want to support and aid the growth of all equestrian sports in the UAE.” International judge and EEF member, Alison Abrahams added: “The level of show jumping in Dubai and the UAE is rising and will only rise further.”
