MAHRA POLO TEAM successfully defended its Polo Masters Cup title crushing Habtoor 8-4 in the final at Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club in Dubailand. The team, made up of patron Rashid Al Habtoor, Daniel Gariador, Juan Ruíz Guiñazú and Jerónimo del Carril, defended its title in style, romping to success despite facing tough opponents in the form of a hard to beat Habtoor polo team. Mahra played brilliantly from the start, employing a strategy that worked perfectly. After finishing both the first and second chukkas with their lead resting at 3-1 and 7-2 respectively, Mahra scored the only goal of the third chukka to take a near impossible to overhaul 8-2 six goal cushion heading into the fourth and final chukka.

Habtoor did well to push for success, but could only score twice and had to be content with having cut the deficit to 8-4. Jerónimo del Carril was the MVP of the final and Quini, owned by Mahra and ridden by Juan Ruíz Guiñazú in the fourth chukka, the Best Playing Pony. Del Carril and Ruíz Guiñazú were the top scorers of the match with four goals each. In the third place play-off, contested earlier, Bin Drai beat Wolves 9-6, courtesy of six goals from Raúl Laplacette. Bin Drai led at the end of each of the four chukkas. They took a 2-1 lead at the end of the first and scored three unanswered goals in the second to lead 5-1 at the halfway stage.

Wolves scored two goals in the third chukka, but still fell short of Bin Drai who scored one more to lead 8-3 going into the final period, where despite Wolves scoring higher than their rivals, it was Bin Drai that finished on top. The Polo Masters Cup, inaugurated in 2016, is a prestigious 14 goal handicap tournament played under the umbrella of the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series. The Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series is currently in its eighth year and is held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Deputy Ruler of Dubai. The series consists of five tournaments, two medium-goal (Polo Masters Cup 14 goal, Dubai Cup 10 goal) and three of 18 goal handicap (McLaren Cup, Julius Baer Gold Cup, Dubai Challenge Cup).
