UAE Derby winners head different directions

Winner of the 2016 Group 2 UAE Derby for Japan, Lani will enter stud next year at Arrow Stud in Hokkaido where he will stand for a fee of ¥500,000 ($4,500). Campaigned as a homebred by Koji and Yoko Maeda of North Hills Farm, the 4yo Tapit colt competed in all three US Triple Crown races last year, his best finish a third in the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes behind Creator, also a son of Tapit and who stands at the JBBA in Hokkaido. He is out of the Group 1 Tenno Sho Autumn winner Heavenly Romance, and a half-brother to Stakes winners Awardee and Amour Briller.

The announcement was made the day after it was revealed 2014 UAE Derby hero, Toast Of New York, is back in training with Jamie Osborne and due back on the racecourse while Al Adiyat is at press, on Wednesday. Runner-up in the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic, he has returned to Osborne who said: “Toast Of New York is back with us and the plan is to run him at Lingfield next Wednesday. “He hasn’t run for three years and is now six, but he has only had eight runs in his life and has been training very well. He’s been a life changing horse for me, and to get another chance to train him is wonderful.”
