Azteca looks Sharp business for Paolucci

Third in last year’s Group 2 Godolphin Mile at a rain drenched Meydan, subsequent Group One winner, the Jorge Navarro-trained Sharp Azteca has been confirmed as a runner in the world’s richest horse race, the $16million Pegasus World Cup a fortnight on Saturday. Ron Paolucci of Loooch Racing Stables has reached a deal to lease a spot in the field to the Grade 1 Cigar Mile Handicap winner after agreeing terms with the 5yo’s owner, Ivan Rodriguez. Paolucci, who will also run his own War Story in the race, said he had been in ongoing discussions with Rodriguez until agreement was reached on Sunday morning.

Asked why interested in partnering with Sharp Azteca’s connections, Paolucci quipped: “Sixteen million reasons! I try to compete at the highest level, but I don’t always have the highest money to be able to compete at that level. When you get an opportunity like that with a War Story and perhaps Game Over, and maybe you can rent a horse and try to get a horse in the spot, it makes sense; it’s a race you want to win.”
